NANS defends youth minister, rejects smear campaign

The National Association of Nigerian Students has defended the Minister of Youth Development, Ayo Olawande, dismissing what it described as sustained persecution and orchestrated smear campaigns against him.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the President of the NANS Senate, Usman Nagwaza, the association said it was concerned about what it termed "unhealthy criticism" targeted at the minister.

The statement read in part,"The National Association of Nigerian Students has come to the defense of the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayo Olawande Wisdom, condemning what it described as sustained persecution and orchestrated smear campaigns against him.

"The association expressed concern over what it termed unhealthy criticism targeted at the Minister, noting that such attacks were not rooted in genuine accountability but in toxic politics, division, and bigotry."

NANS stressed that while it remains committed to accountability in public office, criticism must be constructive.

The association also highlighted what it described as the minister's efforts in youth development, including empowerment programmes, support for entrepreneurship, and promotion of digital innovation among young Nigerians.

It further noted that Olawande had engaged youth stakeholders across the country and supported initiatives aimed at job creation and capacity development.

"The student body highlighted several achievements of the Minister since assuming office, noting that he has championed youth-focused policies and programmes aimed at national development.

"According to NANS, Olawande has strengthened youth empowerment initiatives through skills acquisition programmes, expanded access to funding opportunities for young entrepreneurs, and promoted digital innovation among Nigerian youths," It stated.

NANS described the minister as a resourceful leader who has repositioned the ministry beyond expectations, while reaffirming its belief in the potential of Nigerian youths.

The group also condemned what it called coordinated blackmail and misinformation campaigns against the minister, urging detractors to desist from actions capable of undermining national development.

It concluded by calling for unity and objective assessment of public office holders based on performance and impact rather than political sentiments.
