School feeding: Jigawa sacks two over inflated student figures

The Jigawa State Government has sacked two kitchen masters over allegations of inflating student numbers in schools

PUNCH Online recalls that on January 8, 2026, the state government dismissed and suspended several school feeding contractors over alleged fraud, supply of substandard food items, and inflation of student figures in some boarding schools across the state.

Similarly, on March 7, 2026, the government sacked 22 vendors and companies involved in the just-concluded Ramadan Iftar programme over alleged cheating and dishonesty regarding food quality, quantity, and financial dealings.

Announcing the latest development during an unannounced visit to the schools on Monday, the state Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Auwalu Sankara, said the affected officers were from Model Boarding Primary School, Kazaure, and Government Girls Unity Senior Secondary School, Kazaure.

The commissioner explained that the duo were found guilty of falsifying student numbers, a move seen as an attempt to embezzle funds meant for feeding students.

"The state government will not tolerate any form of fraud, especially in feeding activities," Sankara warned, assuring all that honest and dedicated staff would be supported.

He emphasised that the government is committed to ensuring transparency in the management of resources meant for students' welfare.

The commissioner also visited Kazaure General Hospital, where he inspected the kitchen and patients' wards, stressing the need for accountability.

Clarifying further on his visit to the General Hospital, Kazaure, Sankara said, "My visit to the hospital was part of efforts to ensure quality healthcare services for residents."

He reiterated that he would continue monitoring schools and hospitals across the state to prevent such incidents.

Sankara urged staff to remain honest and dedicated to their duties, assuring them that diligence would be rewarded.

The commissioner also called on the public to report cases of corruption or mismanagement.

Accordingly, Sankara reaffirmed that the state government would take stern action against anyone found guilty of corruption.
