Suspected cultists kill Bayelsa student in apartment raid

A student of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Bayelsa State, identified simply as Christian, has been killed by suspected cultists.

PUNCH Metro learnt from a police source on Sunday that the incident occurred on Thursday night at Christian's apartment, located around the university community.

The victim, said to be a student of the Faculty of Engineering, was reportedly attacked after the assailants stormed his residence in search of his roommate.

"We got a report that some suspected cultists stormed an apartment looking for a rival believed to be Christian's roommate. On getting to the location, they did not find him and shot Christian," the source said.

The student was said to have died on the spot, while the assailants fled the scene.

Another police source said the incident heightened tension in the community.

"There was tension in the community after the incident, but normalcy has been restored. The corpse was evacuated by the police and taken to the morgue," the source disclosed.

A contact number found on the school's website did not connect during PUNCH Metro's efforts to get the institution's reaction. A text message sent to the line had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.

When contacted on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident.

"Investigation is ongoing to apprehend the suspects," he said.

PUNCH Metro reported on Monday that a 20-year-old girl, identified simply as Blessing, was killed by a stray bullet in the community.

It was gathered that the incident also occurred on Thursday when suspected cultists attempted to attack a young man at a laundry shop in the community.
